Abstract

The paper is devoted to the study of gold as a chemical element and as a source of metaphor in modern English. The relevance of the research lies primarily in the need to develop interdisciplinary links and integrate knowledge from different scientific fields, as well as in the active interest of philologists in the processes of metaphorisation of terms in various sciences. The study was carried out using the method of linguistic observation, definition and comparative analysis. The properties of gold as one of the noble metals are considered, and examples with the component 'gold' formed on the basis of the direct and figurative values of the properties under study are analysed. A number of expressions with the component 'gold' are examined, which have been transferred from the jewellery, geological and economic spheres of human activity and have become metaphors in the English language. The research materials may be of interest to linguists and philologists, as well as representatives of the natural sciences.
