PECULIARITIES OF ONYM TRANSLATION FROM ENGLISH INTO RUSSIAN (ON THE CASE OF J.K. ROWLING’S NOVELS ABOUT HARRY POTTER)

The article considers the ways to translate proper names from English into Russian and reveals some peculiarities of onym translation in J.K. Rowling’s novels about Harry Potter in the books by two publishing houses “Rosmen” and “Makhaon”. 50 onym translations were analyzed. The analysis gave us the opportunity to conclude that translator uses not only general principles of translation theory, but also creativity when working with proper names in fictional texts. The article gives the opinion poll data about readers’ preference for the translation by two publishing houses “Rosmen” and “Makhaon”. The results showed the majority like the translation by“Rosmen”. In conclusion it is stated that to translate a fictional text is a creative thinking and the writer’s ideas are conveyed by a translator’s personality that brings some distinction features to a translation.
